"What is wonderful about the results of Obama's landslide victory is not just that an African American was elected, but rather that Obama has managed to reach out to and unite all Americans from differing social and cultural backgrounds" says Merlene Emerson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner for Hammersmith.

"He has breathed new life into the American dream and new meanings to the words freedom and democracy.

"Here across the Atlantic, we need more than ever to share those beliefs and cast aside our cynicism. We need to see change in Britain but not change for change's sake. Only if it will be change for the better.

"I am working to make it happen here in Hammersmith."
