Instead of a meaningless cut in VAT, the Lib Dems propose building the
sustainable infrastructure that Britain desperately needs. A "Green Road
to Recovery" would include a five year programme to insulate a million
homes as well as every school and hospital. We would build 40,000 extra
zero-carbon homes, buy 700 new trains and electrify the Great Western and
Midland mainlines. All of this would cost the same as the £12.5 billion
cost of the cut in VAT. However, these projects would create jobs and
leave a legacy that will fight climate change.
