Research by the Liberal Democrats has found that on average two people on every road in our borough are being watched by a public authority.
Figures uncovered in the annual report of the Interception of Communications Commissioner show that nearly 1,500 requests were made every day to tap telephone calls or intercept e-mails.
This equates to one request for every 78 adults in the UK per year. Put another way, this is the equivalent of at least two people on every road in Town Ward having a request for their phones to be tapped or e-mails to be intercepted by a public authority.
Lib Dem Focus Team Member Paul Kennedy said: "We are sleepwalking into an Orwellian surveillance society. Spying on over half a million people a year cannot be a justified. What's really bizarre, is that the information gathered cannot be used in court, even in terrorist cases. So why all the bugging?
