Liberal Democrats in Hammersmith and Fulham have welcomed reports that BAA may have admitted defeat in their plans for a third runway at Heathrow, which the Labour government approved earlier this year, and which would have led to a new flight path directly over King Street in Hammersmith.
BAA 's statement makes clear that the company still thinks a third runway is the only way to maintain the airport's competitiveness, but says that a planning application could not be prepared and submitted until after the next election. BAA have merely acknowledged that it made sense to await the outcome of that election before making the formal planning application.
Opponent of the runway will hold off their celebrations until it is finally clear what the policy of the next government may be, and how determined it will be to support local residents and the environment against the big business lobby.
