Merlene Emerson, Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for Hammersmith, has today called upon the Mayor of London to account for the loss of some £185 million of public money through failed transport projects across London.
Just halfway through his Mayoral term, Boris Johnson has given the green light to the cancellation of works to create step-free access at 6 underground stations at a cost of £20 million; indefinitely deferred improvements at Shepherds Bush station costing tax-payers £39 million and signed off bonuses totalling £5.3 million to TfL workers at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet.
Commenting, Merlene said: "Not only has this string of cancelled projects resulted in great inconvenience for many Londoners, but it also represents a complete policy U-turn from a Mayor who was elected upon promises to defend the capital's transport network.
"At a time when we should be striving to make public transport safe, accessible and affordable, the Mayor is putting a spanner in the works at every single turn. At the very least, it is only right that Mr Johnson gives London residents a very public explanation."
