Hammersmith and Fulham Liberal Democrats welcome the historic agreement between our Party Leaders and the Conservative Party to form a coalition government. We congratulate our new Prime Minister David Cameron on the vision he has shown, and our party leader, Nick Clegg, who has taken us to the point where we can put our Liberal Democrat policies and values into effect.
We are especially encouraged by the explicit recognition in the Agreement of our policy priorities and manifesto commitments: lifting the lower income tax threshold, investing in the education of the most deprived children, greater controls over the financial services sector and investments in green technology, and a commitment to the reform of our electoral system, including a referendum on AV.
We are heartened that in many of these key areas, the Prime Minister has demonstrated his commitment by appointing Liberal Democrat ministers.
We are especially pleased that among the first policy announcements is confirmation that the Government will not permit a third runway at Heathrow, instead supporting the establishment of a high speed rail network, and will replace the air passenger duty charged per passenger with one charged per flight.
Last night, Nick Clegg said "We are now going to form a new government. More importantly than anything else, we are going to form a new kind of government; I hope this is the start of a new kind of politics I have always believed in. Diverse, plural, where politicians with different points of view find a way to work together to provide the good government for the sake of the whole country deserves."
"That was what we were asked to do by the people of Britain in the General Election last Thursday and that is what we will deliver."
