New Coalition Government to act on H&F News

May 27, 2010 9:45 AM

The Liberal Democrats have obtained commitments in the new Coalition Agreement with the Conservatives which should help curb the local single-party Conservative-run Council from abusing its powers here in Hammersmith and Fulham. In particular:

  • stopping unfair competition by local authority newspapers, such as H&F News
  • new powers to help communities save local facilities and services threatened with closure
  • restrictions on the use of surveillance powers by councils
  • removing restrictions on social housing tenants
  • giving local residents the power to instigate local referendums where their councillors fail to represent their interests.

Unfortunately, the local single-party Tory administration will continue to exercise distorted powers - including to set their own remuneration and allowances - until the unfair winner-takes-all voting system is changed, and they stop winning artificial majorities in the Council. The Liberal Democrats introduced a fair voting system called Single Transferable Vote for Scottish local elections when we were in coalition with Labour there, and this has delivered genuine community-based local democracy. However, the Conservatives are blocking voting reform in English local government, because the existing system gives them far more than their fair share of councillors.
