The official investigation into the blaze at Robert Owen House must be fully independent, and urgent fire checks are needed across the Borough, say local Lib Dems, after residents in 13 flats were evacuated during a terrifying blaze on Monday 26 July:
Local Lib Dem campaigner Tamara Dragadze said: "Our hearts go out to the residents who have been affected, and our first priority must be to make sure they are looked after, and the building is made safe for remaining residents. H&F Homes have promised a full investigation, but this must be independent. This incident raises serious questions about fire safety in our Borough. With a single party administration in charge, and focused on churning out only 'good news' stories about the Council, anything less will look like a white-wash."
Fulham Lib Dems spokesman Paul Kennedy called for urgent fire safety checks in this and other Hammersmith and Fulham estates: "A BBC investigation last year found that the Council had failed to check fire safety in 34 housing developments, in breach of fire regulations. Given that flats are supposed to have at least one hour's fire resistance, the speed with which this fire took hold raises serious questions about fire safety across the Borough."
