H&F Lib Dems seek residents’ views on tuition fees

Hammersmith and Fulham Liberal Democrats have welcomed the funding safeguards achieved by the Coalition Government in our party's priority areas:

However the Liberal Democrats face a dilemma over how to maintain university funding in the face of the pressing need to reduce Government spending.

The Lib Dem view is that tuition fees are unfair and we want to phase them out. This is opposed by the other parties, who would prefer either a graduate tax, or, as recommended by the Browne Review set up by the last Labour Goverment, higher fees.

We want to make sure that students are treated fairly too.

- a) out of taxes on the better-off including non-UK graduates and foreign executives, and those who have made their fortunes without the benefit of a univerisity degree
- b) through a graduate tax for all new graduates above a threshold income?
- c) allowing universities to set and raise their own funding but requiring them to provide higher means-tested grants to students from poorer families
- d) by providing higher loans to pay for higher tuition fees, but limiting loan repayments for low earners
- e) keeping the same level of tuition fees, but reducing the number of funded university places
